Royal Marine Light Infantry, H. M. S. "Champagne"
Moretonhampstead (St. Andrew) Churchyard, UK
Son of Anna Bennett, Lime St., Moretonhampstead, Devon.

The "Western Times" reported following in October 1917

Moretonhampstead Soldier Killed at Newton Station
At the inquest into the circumstances attending the death of Pte. George Bennett, R. M. L. I., of Moretonhampstead, who met his death by falling under a moving train at Newton Station on Friday night, the mother, Mrs. Ann Bennett, said her son George was saying "Good-bye" to her through a carriage window of the 7.30 train to Moreton. She was returning home, and he was rejoining his ship by a later train. As her train moved out he slipped and fell under it. - Two railwaymen who were on the station, and saw the tragedy, stated that the deceased was on the footboard, and on stepping off when the train was in motion, staggered and fell between two coaches, two of which ran over his legs. - A verdict of "Accidental death" was returned, and an expression of sympathy passed with the relatives.

of 65, Cornwall Road, Lower Walmer, Deal, Kent.

Francis Huxtable was born on the 1st January, 1887 at Drewsteignton, Devon to William & Emma (nee Duckham) Huxtable. By the age of 24yrs, Francis was married to Kate Meleady and already had two sons, Frank & Jack & was a Private in the Royal Marines Light Infantry. Francis was aboard the HMS Formidable, a 15,250 ton Battleship when it was sunk by 2 torpedoes from a German U.24 submarine, 20 miles off Start Point (off the Devon Coast) at 2am on the 1st January 1915. The first torpedo hit the number one boiler port side, a second explosion caused the ship to list heavily starboard. Huge 30ft waves, strong winds, rain & hail lashed the ship & she sunk in less than 2 hours in 180ft of water. Only 199 men were saved out of a complement of about 750, sadly Francis was not one of them. His body was never recovered, but his name is on the Memorial Register at Chatham Naval Memorial 1915

Moreton Man Killed.
Moreton has lost yet another of her brave sons. We regret to announce that a report has been received that Pte. George Crout, 2nd Batt. Devon Regt., was killed in the trenches at Estaires. The sad news came indirectly through a friend who knew him well, and who was with him in the trenches at tzhe time. The brave fellow was only 19 years of age, and every sympathy is felt for the parents. His father is also serving.
