The roots of this Best family are in Brentford, UK.
William married Hannah Nibbs in 1845, and emigrated to Wellington, New Zealand with his wife and three children in 1851. Four more children being subsequently born in Tawa, north of Wellington, where William took up land and farmed. In 1854 his father Abraham joined him at the age of 82, dying a year later. William became chief clerk in the Treasury Department in Wellington, retiring 20 years later as Secretary to the Treasury.

William and Hannah's children were:
Edith Maria, born in New Brentford, UK, 20 June 1846, married Walter Edward Gudgeon on 16 Jan 1875 at Wellington, died in Ormond, New Zealand, 21 Mar 1879.
Walter, born in New Brentford, UK, 10 Mar 1848, married, no children, died 2 Oct 1929
lsabel, born 27 Feb 1850, married Robert MacDougall 1874, later moved to Argentina. She died on 1 Dec 1938.
Frederick William, born 10 Dec 1852 and died in Wellington 24 May 1866. Aged 13 years.
Madeline, born in Tawa on 4 Aug 1854 and died in Otaki on 28 Oct 1944.
Elsdon, born in Tawa 30 June 1856, married Adelaide Wylie on 2 Dec 1903 at Rotorua, died 9 Sep 1931 at Wellington. Ethnologist who made a lifelong study of pre-European Maori society, and wrote several books and articles on this subject.
