Devon, J. P., late of Madras, now Dublin Fusiliers, of the family of Tnchbrakie and Aberuthven, co. Perth, by his wife, Catherine, daughter of David Sandeman; born Crieff, co. Perth, 29 October 1872; educated Charterhouse, and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst; was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant, Cameron Highlanders, 18 June 1892; promoted Lieutenant 01 February 1894, being Adjutant of his regiment from 17 November 1897 to 04 June 1901; Captain 02 November 1898, Major 12 July 1909. and Temp. Lieutenant-Colonel 11 June 1915; served in the South African War 1899-1902; as Adjutant of the 12th Battn. Mounted Infantry from October 1901 to 31 May 1902; took part in the operations in the Transvaal October to December 1901, and March to 31 May 1902; operations in Orange River Colony May to October 1901, and December 1901 to March 1902, and those in Cape Colony May 1902 (Queen's Medal with five clasps); was Adjutant of the Imperial Yeomanry from 01 April 1903 to 31 March 1907; after which he rejoined the 1st Battn. Cameron Highlanders, being transferred to the 2nd Battn. in India after his promotion; was an extra A. D. C. to the King-Emperor during the latter's visit to India; returned to England in 1914; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 19 December 1914, as Second in Command, and on promotion to Lieutenant-Colonel was given command of the 1st Battn., and was killed in action near Loos 10 March 1916. Buried in Noeux-les-Mines Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais.
Lieutenant-Colonel Graeme was three times mentioned in Dispatches [Loudon Gazettes, 22 June, 1915, and 1 Jan. 1916] by F. M. Sir John (now Lord) French, and [London Gazette, 15 June, 1916) by General (now F. M.) Sir Douglas Haig, for gallant and distinguished service in the field, and was also awarded the Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George on 1 January 1916.
He married at Sutton, Wansford, 10 August 1906, Penelope, daughter of the Rev. William Hopkinson, of Sutton Grange, Wansford, co. Northampton.
