Son of John and Isabella Davidson,
of Howgate Foot, Appleby, Westmorland.

George Preston Davidson, born on 16 June 1898, was baptised in Appleby, Westmorland, England on 21 August 1898.

Son of J. T. Davidson, master ironmonger of Howgate Foot, Appleby, with a shop in Boroughgate. George was admitted to Bongate National Elementary School, across the road from his home, in 1906. In 1910 he transferred to the new Appleby County Primary School, and a year later won a County Council scholarship to A. G. S. He was there for three years, leaving school in 1914 to become a clerk at the London City & Midland Bank in Maryport.
Enlisting in nthe 2nd Battalion of the Border Regiment in 1915, soon after he was seventeen, George was sent to France in June 1917, the day after his birthday, with the rank of Lance Corporal. He was soon engaged in the prolonged battle of Passchendaele. On 27th October the "Herald" reported that his parents had been told that George was 'missing'. Four more weeks passed before his death was confirmed. The nineteen year-old soldier was commemorated in the naming of his posthumous nephew, the late George Davidson, long-serving Appleby postman; a century on, several of his relatives live locally
Text was taken from the book "They fell for England". Written by Andy Connell.
