Major John Palgrave Heathcote Ouchterlony, D. S. O., R. E., who was killed on June 8, two days before his thirty-third birthday, was the eldest son of Lieut. Colonel T. H. Ouchterlony, late R.A., and of the late Mrs. Ouchterlony, of The Gaynd, Arbroath, Forfarshire. He entered the Army in 1901. During this war he was twice mentioned in despatches, and was awarded the D. S. O. in the last Birthday Honours List. When recently offered a good appointment in Egypt, he refused it, giving as his reason that "his duty lay in France." His Colonel wrote : "He was one of the finest officers I have ever known." Major Ouchterlony married, in 1908, the only daughter of the late Mr. W. H. Spackman, barrister-at-law, of Christchurch, New Zealand, who, with a daughter, survives him.
