Major Miles Barne was inspecting the battalion transport of the 1st SG at Bught Camp,Langemark on 17 September when both he and the men became aware of British plane in difficulties above them. As they looked on in fascination they did not spot an item thrown out of the aircraft by the desperate pilot as he struggled for control. It was a bomb.
Too late the Guardsmen spotted the danger and dived for cover but they caught the full force of the explosion and one was killed instantly while 5 were wounded.
Miles Barne was wounded most severely of all and later died of his injuries in the Casualty Clearing Station at Mendinghem.
