The Border Regiment, son of Joseph Bundle Martin, of Fowlis Wester, Crieff (late Scots Guards), Schoolmaster, Registrar, and Inspector of Poor, by his wife, Jane, daughter of the late John McEwan; born The Schoolhouse, Fowlis Wester, co. Perth, 18 October 1896; educated Public School there, and Perth Academy; was an apprentice in the Clydesdale Bank, Crieff; joined the Black Watch 14 March, 1915; served with the Expditionary Force in France and Flanders from 03 September 1916; took part in the fighting on the Somme in that year, being wounded three times; was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant The Border Regiment 15 February 1917; promoted Lieutenant 06 April, and Captain (for bravery on the field) 11 August 1917, and was killed in action at Passchendaele Ridge, near Ypres, 02 December following. Buried where he fell.
His Commanding Officer wrote: "Your son was a real good fellow, and most popular with all ranks. He was one of the bravest boys it has been my good fortune to meet, and he died like the good soldier and fearless leader he always proved himself to be. He leaves behind him a splendid memory of duty well and gallantly done, which will remain with us as a cherished example for all time." unm.
