CLAYTON - In memory of my dearly loved brother, Cpl. E. F. Clayton, killed in Belgium 29 July 1917, aged 21 years.

He gave his best, he gave his all.
He was one of the best that answered the call;
And he died like a hero as many have done.
A true brother he was, and a mother's loved son.
- Inserted by his loving brother Charles George Clayton
on active service in France.
Published in the "Age" (Melbourne, Victoria) on Saturday, 18 August 1917

CLAYTON - Killed in action on 29th July, Gunner Ernest Clayton, loving brother of Wilfred, also Charles (on active service), brother-in-law of Ivy Clayton, and dearly loved uncle of little Wilfred and Irene, aged 21 years and 3 months.

We pictured your safe returning,
   And longed to clasp your hand;
But God has postponed our meeting -
   'T will be in a better land.

CLAYTON - Killed in action somewhere in France on 29th July, Ernest F. Clayton, late of Greensborough; loving nephew of Mrs. A. E. Haughton, and cousin of Mrs. S. Booth, Wonthaggi, aged 21 years and 3 months.

He never shunned his country's call,
He gladly gave his life, his all;
He died the helpless to defend,
An Australian soldier's noble end.
