The Orcadian reports the death of John Alexander Foubister:
St. Andrews
It is with deep regret that we announce the death in action on February 25, of Private John Alexander Foubister, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was the second son and the second eldest of the family of six sons and one daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Foubister, Gowanwell, Methlick, Aberdeenshire, formerly of The Barns,, Tankerness, and Howe, Shapans???, were John was born twenty-five years ago.
When, in 1938, there was an urgent call for men, John and his elder brother, who is now a Sergeant in the Royal Enginners, were among the first to offer their services.
John joint the Orkney Heavy Regiment, and at the outbreak of war was stationed at Stanger Head Battery, Flotta. After being a considerable time there, he volunteered for service further afield and was drafted to an A. A. Battery in the South of England. Four days after D-day his battery crossed the Normandy and shot down several of the Luftwaffe during the first few days.
However, when the gunners' services were not required so much, John, being an A1 man, was transferred to the infantry. After several weeks of training in England, he again crossed to the battlefront with the 7th North Staffordshire Regiment, but it was his wish to serve in a Highland regiment, and it was with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and the 51st Division that he made the supreme sacrifice. Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to his parents, brothers and sister in their sad bereavement. Before being called up he worked on his father's farm at The Barns, Tankerness. The family subsequently moved to Aberdeenshire and their address now is Gowanwell.
