Born at Shanklin, Isle of Wight.

Remark: The (S. S.) H. M. S. "India" was attacked by a German submarine and sank on 08 August 1915. Walter James Beynon is named in the casualty list of the "India".

A British newspaper reports in August 1915:
NORWEGIAN PROTEST
THE INDIA TORPEDOED IN TERRITORIAL WATERS
Cristiana, Aug. 12 - The Norwegian Government to-day informed Germany that the India was torpedoed in what has always been maintained to be Norwegian territorial waters.
The question of the internment of the seamen rescued from the India is not yet settled. Twelve have died and were buried to-day in the presence of large crowds.
Christiana, Aug. 13 - It is officially announced that just as the Norwegian Government previously insisted, in face of the contrary contention of the British Government, that the West Fjord in its entirety was a Norwegian territorial water, the Norwegian Government now, on the occasion of the torpedoing of the British auxiliary cruiser India, has informed the German Government that the West Fjord has from time immemorial been regarded as belonging to Norwegian sea territory. This is specifically the fact with the part of the Fjord where the India was attacked.
