6th Coy. Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)
Arras Memorial, France
Son of James and Janet Croft, nee Thompson,
of Green Lane, Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire.

The birth of Hugh Croft was registered in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, England during the third quarter of 1893.

Hugh was originally assigned to the Durham Light Infantry as Private 4724. At some point after his arrival in France, he transferred to the Machine Gun Corps and was re-numbered. The Companies of the Machine Gun Corps were formed in October 1915, with Cavalry, Motor and Infantry branches, followed in March 1916, by the Heavy Branch. The 6th Company joined the 2nd Division on 1st March 1916 and moved to the 2nd Battalion on 4th March 1918. They were part of the Allied Third Army on 21st March 1918 and their objective was to defend an area south of Arras to the Flesquieres Salient. An artillery bombardment began at 4:35am on 21st March, with an intensive German barrage opened on British positions south west of St. Quentin for a depth of 2.5-3.7 miles. At 4:40am a heavy German barrage began along a 40 mile front. Trench Mortars, Mustard Gas, Chlorine Gas, Tear Gas and smoke canisters were concentrated on the forward trenches, while heavy artillery bombarded rear areas, to destroy Allied artillery and supply lines. Over 3,500,000 shells were fired in five hours, hitting targets over an area of 150 square miles in the biggest barrage of the war, against the Fifth Army, most of the front of the Third Army and some of the front of the First Army to the north. The front line was badly damaged and communications were cut with the Rear Zone, which was severely disrupted. Hugh was missing in action in this attack and was later presumed to have died on 21st March 1918. To this day, his last resting place remains unknown. Hugh's soldier's effects record mentions a Gertrude Fletcher as his legatee, in addition to his mother Janet. This could have been Hugh's sweetheart but this is only a best guess.
