A local newspaper reports the death of Harry Baker:
Information has been received of the death from wounds received in action in France of Sapper Harry Baker, R. E. (T), whose name was at Swine.    Before enlisting in March, 1915, he was employed as an apprentice joiner by Mr. Gardham, of Thorngumbald.    He had been in France ten months, and had the pleasure of his first leave only five weeks ago.    The following is a copy of the letter received from his commandant, Lieut.-Colonel Newell: - "I very much regret to inform you that your son, Sapper H. Baker, died in Hospital on the 19th July, 1916, from the effects of wounds received in action.    Please accept my sincerest sympathy. It is some consolation to know that your son died doing his duty, serving his King and Country.    I am sorry to lose such a good man from the unit under my command. He will be difficult to replace."
