This NCO is the Mortar Pl Sjt. During the early morning of 1 July 1944 his mortar position in the Baron area was subject to heavy shellfire which knocked out one mortar and caused several casualties to the crew.
During this time, Sjt. Baker, whilst under heavy fire, with complete disregard for his own safety, tended the wounded, constantly visited the mortar positions and personally put out a fire among some phosphorous amunition.
Both during this action and during the whole period during which the Batallion was in the line, Sjt. Baker has, by his fearless example and calm behaviour been an inspiration to his platoon.
