Royal Canadians (Black Watch Highlanders), Canadian Expeditionary Force, son of the late John Blain, by his wife, Jane, daughter of John Hetherington; born Brampton, Cumberland, 23 June 1874; educated Croft House, Brampton; went to Canada in August 1914, and settled at Montreal; enlisted 10 November following; arrived in England with the 2nd Contingent of the Canadian Expeditionary Force April 1915; served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from May 1915, and was killed in action at Passchendaele 04 November 1917. Buried there.
His Platoon Offiver wrote: "I always found him a good soldier, hard worker, willing and cheerful at all times to do his duty. He is greatly missed by all who knew him."
He married at Barrowhy, Grantham, co. Lincoln, 05 November 1904, Martha Elizabeth (8, Hull Road, Withernsea, co. York), daughter of Arthur William Singleton, and had two sons: John Singleton, born 28 October 1906, and James, born 22 December 1908.
