Herbert Carmichael Irwin

Herbert Carmichael Irwin married Olive Marjory MacDonald Teacher in Fareham, Hampshire in 1926.
Olive Teacher was born on 17 November 1906 in Scotland and died in Uckfield, Sussex, England on 5 April 2005. Her parents were Dr. and Mrs. Charles C. Teacher.

5 October 1930: British airship R-101 crashed and 46 people were killed.
The British airship R-101 was the world's largest airship whatever was built at that time.
It left Cardington in England at 6:30 in the evening on 4 October 1930 to travel via Ismailia, Egypt to Karachi, India. The reason of this long journey was to test the possibility of a regular airship service between Britain, India and Australia. 53 persons were on board of the airship.
Five miles south of Abbeville, France, R-101 did report via radio hard rain and a wind speed up to 54 knots. Next morning, it was the 5th of October at 2:05, five miles south of Beauvais, the wind reached gale force and R-101 hurtled to earth from an altitude of 400 feet. It crashed into an open field and burst into flames. Only seven were in luck to survive. They were brought into the Beauvais Hospital. One of them died there only a few days later.

Wing Comdr. R. B. E. Colmore, Director of Airship Development
Maj. G. H. Scott, airman and former commander of the R-34 airship
Lt. Col. V. C. Richmond, designer of the R-101
Flight Lt. H. C. Irwin, captain of the R-101
Squadron Leader E. L. Johnston, navigator

Herbert Carmichael Irwin was born in Dundrum, County Dublin, Ireland on 26 June 1894 and died at Allonne, Departement de l'Oise, Picardie, France on 05 October 1930. Hie parents were Thomas Frederick Nesbitt Irwin and Elinor Emily Landsay Carroll. He was married to Olivia Marjory MacDonald Teacher in the Holy Trinity Church in Fareham, Hampshire, England on 23 September 1926. With him were buried 47 officers and men of the Airship R 101 in the cemetery of St. Mary the Virgin in Cardington, Bedfordshire, England.
