John Walker Dickinson Leigh was born in Brotton-in-Cleveland Yorkshire, England on 03 August 1892 and was baptised in the church of St. Margaret in Brotton at the same day. His parents were John Dickinson Leigh and Helena Ann Leigh. He was married to Phyllis Madeline Mary Wait in Coimbatore, Madras, India on 14 March 1929.

1914-19  In H. M. Forces, Motor Cyclist Despatch Rider. Commission 1915. Transfered to Flying Corps, 1916. M. C., 1918. Croix-de-Guerre (with palm), 1917. Officer in charge all engines in R. F. C. Sqn. for defence of Salonica from Boehe's Bombing Sqn., 1917. Officer in charge aerial tests of Engines, Aircraft Production, 1918. Despatch Pilot (cross channel flights), 1919.
Present Employment:
Assistant engineer, Messrs. Harrison and Crosfield, Quelon, Travancore, India. Has had a district assigned him and is responsible for eng. work of that district. Has to overhaul and make good defrects in machy. for tea and rubber factories. Has designed and is now busy instlg. new engines for 3 factories, elec. light instln., overhead carrier for a tea plantation, etc.
1910-20   Total engineering experience, 10 years (5 in H. M. Forces).
