General Education: Bede Collegiate Sec. School, 1903-10 (previous education at a Church School).

Technical Education: Day Course, Sunderland Tech. Coll., 1st session 1912-13, came out top in year; 2nd session 1913-14, came out top in year, awarded Student Demonstratorship; June 1913 1st class London Matric.; 1914-15 3rd session, top in year, awarded Sir Wm. Allan Scholarship; passed inter B. Sc. London and obtained Whitworth Ex. Studies postponed owing to war.

Apprenticeship (Age 15¾): 5 years 6 months; commenced with Messrs. G. Clark, Ltd., Sunderland, Aug. 1910 in workshops with 3 sessions of 6 months at Day Classes. Feb. 1915 entered d. o. - exp. on turbine and recip. eng. details, pipe arrts., etc., left Aug. 1917.

Subsequent Career: 1 year 9 months; Aug. 1917, obtained commission in R. N., served on board H. M. S. "Hindustan", H. M. S. "Superb", and on staff at Chatham about 5 months. Pract. theo. and tech. exp. with turbine, recip., elec., refrig., oil engine and air-compressing plants. All types of boilers and aux. machy., burning of coal and oil fuel, etc. Jany. 1919, recommended for promotion to Eng. Lieut.
Year 7 months; May 1919, returned to Sunderland Tech. College to prepare for Final B. Sc. (Hons.), London, held in July 1920.
Evening Class Lecturer in Mech. Eng. at Sunderland Tech. Coll.
Year 2 months; 20 Dec. 1919, appt. Asst Manager of Refrig. Dept., P. Brotherhood, Ltd., Peterborough.

Brief details of most important Mechanical Engineering work for which Candidate has been personally responsible: Eng. Officer of watch of Super-Dreadnought (30,000 SHP). Eng. Officer of (a) boiler plant of 21 boilers; (b) aux. plant of 2 Diesel dynamos, 2 steam dynamos, 3 hydr. engines, 3 air compressors, etc.
