Smith & Lister, London
Smith & Lister

A second signature is to find on the letter. It belongs to E. Morris (the recipient of the sum mentioned in the letter).

The sum of £1 would be worth approximately £50 in today's money, but the spending power in 1895 would be worth considerably more than today!
Smith & Lister
43 & 44, Friday Street
17 & 19, Cannon Street
London, July 1, 1895

Having been for 37 years at the head of the firm of Smith & Lister I have now to announce my retirement from the business. I cannot however sever my connection with the employees of the firm, with many of whom I have been associated for a very long time, without leaving behind me some token of my appreciation of their services.
It has perplexed me somewhat to decide in what way this should be done, after much consideration I have thought it best to distribute a sum of money among all the members of the staff, in appointing which I have had regards to the length of service of each member. For your portion of the division Mr. Cattell will hand to you on application the sum of Pound 1 for your acceptance, your signature for which will be a sufficient acknowledgement.
I must now say farewell and in doing so I leave with you my best wishes for your future welfare and happiness and remain

Yours faithfully

Smith

George Henry Smith
My grandfather George Henry Smith from Naracoorte, South Australia, served in the
West Australian Light Horse in the Boer War in South Africa.
He met and fell in love with my grandmother Isabella Cairns in South Africa and married
her in Capetown before returning to Australia. He was either discharged in Capetown, or
one story we heard was that he jumped ship and swam back to be with his sweetheart.
He returned to Australia in 1913 with a wife and three children.
