Eighty Sixth Regiment of Foot

These are to Certify that no. 2156 Pte. Matthew Whelan, born in the parish of Borris-in-Ossary, in or near the Town of Borris-in-Ossary (Remark: Co. Laois, Ireland) in the county of Queens, was enlisted at Clonaslee for the 86th Foot (regiment) on 28th Dec 1843 at the age of 18 years.
That he served in the Army for 21 years, and 40 days. Completed in India - 15 years.
He is discharged in consequence of ??? out Pension at his own request having completed 21 years service.

Matt Whelan was baptised in the parish of Abbeyleix and Ballyroan in Laois and Kilkenny, Ireland, on 07 May 1824. His parents were Denis Whelan and Mary Duff. He was married to Catherine Fitzpatrick in Dublin, Ireland, on 26 July 1865. His death was registered in the district Dublin South in the year 1873.
