Lieutenant Colonel Gerald Lionel Joseph Goff, 1st Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's). The eldest surviving son of Joseph Goff of Burton Grange, Hertfordshire, and Lady Adela, daughter of the 2nd Earl of Ranfurly. Baptised on 08 June 1855 in Hale, Hampshire. Educated at Eton. Commissioned into the 91st Foot from the Militia in March 1875. Was promoted Captain in July 1884, to Major September 1892, and to Lieutenant Colonel July 1898. Married Ellen Mary Charlotte Dundas, daughter of Sir Robert Dundas, 1st Bt. and Emily Louisa Diana Knox, on 23 May 1894 in Westminster, London. He served with his battalion in the Zulu War of 1879, and was present at the action of Gingindhlovu and the relief of Ekowe, receiving the medal with clasp. He was adjutant of the 1st Volunteer Battalion of the North Staffordshire Regiment from Jan 1888, to Jan 1893. He was a magistrate for Hampshire and Wiltshire, and resided at Hale Park, Salisbury. He deployed to South Africa in command of his battalion in Oct 1899, served with the Kimberley Relief Force, and was present at the battle of Modder River. He was killed in action at Magersfontein while leading his battalion in an attack on the Boer trenches, aged 44 years.

Major Sydney Loftus Robinson, 1st Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's). Son of Sir Henry Robinson and Honourable Eva Arthur Medora Robinson. Born at Bletchingdon Park, Oxfordshire. Baptised on 15 Jul 1860 at Bletchingdon, Oxfordshire. Commissioned into the 93rd Foot from the Oxford Militia 23 Jul 1879. Promoted to Lieutenant in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, Jul 1881, to Captain Nov 1888, and to Major Jun 1899. He was adjutant of his regiment from Nov 1887 to Nov 1891. He served in the campaign on the North-West Frontier of India under Sir William Lockbart, 1897-98, with the Tochi Field Force, receiving the medal with clasp. He landed with his battalion in South Africa in Nov 1899, and was present at the action of Modder River. He received a gunshot wound to the head while attacking Boer positions at the Battle of Magersfontein on 11 Dec 1899. He died from his wounds at the Stationary Hospital, Orange River Station the following day. Initially buried at the Orange River Station. Reinterred in West End Cemetery, Kimberley.

The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the "Orcana" about 27 October 1899, and arrived at the Cape about 18 November 1899. Along with the 2nd Black Watch, 1st Highland Light Infantry, and 2nd Seaforths, they formed the 3rd or Highland Brigade under Major General Wauchope. On arrival they joined the Kimberley Relief Force under Major General Lord Methuen. They fought at the battles of Modder River on 28 November 1899 and Magersfontein on 11 December 1899, leading to the relief of Kimberley, and the battle of Paardeberg 18-27 February 1900. Lieutenant Courtenay was serving with the Mounted Infantry. He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of Paadeberg. His death is mentioned in the despatch of Field Marshal Earl Roberts, from Paardeberg, 28 February 1900.

2nd Lieutenant Walter Buchanan King, 1st Battalion the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's). Son of Charles MacIntosh King and Jane Margaret King (nee Buchanan). Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders on 18 May 1898. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the "Orcana" about 27 October 1899, and arrived at the Cape about 18 November 1899. Along with the 2nd Black Watch, 1st Highland Light Infantry, and 2nd Seaforths, they formed the 3rd or Highland Brigade under Major General Wauchope. On arrival they joined the Kimberley Relief Force under Major General Lord Methuen. They fought at the battles of Modder River on 28 November 1899 (20 killed, 95 wounded) and Magersfontein on 11 December 1899 (26 killed and 67 wounded). 2nd Lieutenant King was first reported missing at Magersfontein, but was afterwards found to have been killed in action on 11 December 1899. He was buried on the battlefield. His remains were later reinterred at West End Cemetery.

Deployed with his battlion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the "Orcana" about 27 October 1899, and arrived at the Cape about 18 November 1899. Along with the 2nd Black Watch, 1st Highland Light Infantry, and 2nd Seaforths, they formed the 3rd or Highland Brigade under Major General Wauchope. On arrival they joined the Kimberley Relief Force under Major General Lord Methuen, who with three brigades were on their way to raise the Boer siege of Kimberley. They fought at the battles of Modder River and Magersfontein leading to the relief of Kimberley, and the battle of Paardeberg 18-27 February 1900 and the capture of Bloemfontein and advance towards Heilbron (South of Johannesburg). He died of syncope at Balmoral, Transvaal. He was buried in Heidelberg Cemetery.

Lieutenant John Hunter, 4th (Stirlingshire) Volunteer Battalion the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's). He obtained his lieutenant's commission in the 4th (Stirlingshire) Volunteer Battalion in 1898, and on volunteering for service in South Africa during the Second Anglo Boer War was gazetted a temporary Lieutenant on 24 February 1900. He served in the Volunteer Service Company of the 1st Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's). They joined the 1st Battalion in South Africa in early 1900 in time to take part in the advance from Bloemfontein towards Heilbron (South of Johannesburg), before the battalion headed to the Transvaal. He fell ill and died of enteric fever (typhoid) at 29 Stationary Hospital, Heilbron, Orange Free State.

Corporal J. Mowatt was wounded in action at the Battle of Modder River on 28 November 1899 in Cape Colony during the advance of a British column under Lord Methuen that was attempting to relieve the besieged town of Kimberley. This forced the Boers under General Piet Cronjé to retreat to Magersfontein. J. Mowatt subsequently died of his wounds.

Lance Corporal A. S. Inglis was killed in action at the Battle of Modder River in Cape Colony during the advance of a British column under Lord Methuen that was attempting to relieve the besieged town of Kimberley. This forced the Boers under General Piet Cronjé to retreat to Magersfontein.

Sergeant Barber fell during one of the hardest-fought early battles of the Second Boer War. Lord Methuen's column was advancing north from the Orange River to relieve the besieged diamond-mining town of Kimberley.
At Modder River, Boer forces under General Piet Cronjé dug in along the riverbanks, creating a long, concealed defensive line. British infantry - including the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders - were forced to advance across open ground under heavy rifle fire. Casualties were severe, and the fighting lasted all day.
Barber was killed in this action, part of the same engagement that ultimately compelled Cronjé to withdraw toward Magersfontein, where the next major battle occurred.

Sergeant W. E. Smith was wounded in action while attacking Boer positions at the Battle of Magersfontein on 11 Dec 1899. Died of his wounds the following day.

He was wounded (gunshot wound to chest and abdomen) at the Battle of Modder River 28 November 1899 during the Second Anglo Boer War 1899-1902. Subsequently died of his wounds at Wynberg Military Hospital, Cape Town, aged 29 years and 11 months.

He fought at the battles of Modder River on 28 November 1899 and Magersfontein on 11 December 1899, leading to the relief of Kimberley, and the battle of Paardeberg 18-27 February 1900 and the capture of Bloemfontein and advance towards Heilbron (South of Johannesburg), before heading to the Transvaal. They took part in the advance towards Balmoral (16-25 July 1900) and then to Nelspruit, arriving there on 4 Sep 1900. They were then sent west of Pretoria and for some months assisted in guarding Rustenburg, Oliphant, and Megato Neks, and escorted convoys from Commando Nek to Rustenburg. In April 1901 the battalion was taken to the Eastern Transvaal, operating in columns. Lance Corporal Aitken fell ill and died of enteric fever (typhoid) in Pretoria. He was buried in Church Street Cemetery.
