On 08 December 1900 Private Bliss was part of a column of 1500 men, 9 cannons and over 100 wagons as they camped at Nooitgedacht, 3 miles NW of Hekpoort, west of Pretoria. On 13 December 1900 they were attacked by a Boer force of about 1500 men under Generals Koos de la Rey and Christiaan Beyers. Four companies of the Northumberland Fusiliers were holding the ridges overlooking the camp. Beyers attacked the ridges with 4 of the 6 commandos, killing or capturing the Fusiliers, before turning on the main encampment. The Boers looted the stores before being driven off. Private Bliss was one of those killed in the battle. He was buried on the battlefield. His remains were later reinterred at Krugersdorp.

De Aar was a town in the Cape Colony (De Aar, Northern Cape). It was an important railway junction where the lines from Cape Town and Port Elizabeth* merged before going north to Kimberley and Mafikeng (Mafeking) and one of three concentration stations in the colony where equipment and supplies were stocked. It was also the point where the brigades and divisions commanded by Lt-Gen Lord Methuen were concentrated in November 1899 before moving north to the Modder River. Major General Lord Kitchener was in De Aar on 1 March 1900 and again from 8 March to control operations in the area west of the line Cape Town-Kimberley being threatened by Cape rebels.

The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's) Son of the late Alexander Fraser (1831-1890) and Jessie Fraser, nee Lamb (1831-1873).

Robert Fraser was born on 5 December 1872 in Aberdeen, 5th son of Alexander Fraser, Shore Porter, and Jessie Lamb. He enlisted in the Gordons in around 1891 and subsequently requested a transfer to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in which one of his brothers, John, was a Colour Sergeant. The 1891 (5 April 1891)census shows them both based at Aldershot. Having served for seven years, he was put on the reserve in 1897 and worked for the Post Office in Aberdeen. When the reservists were called out in October he saw active service in India, being engaged in several skirmishes at Dargai. His name appears on the West End Municipal Cemetery Memorial in Kimberley.

Private J. Gilmour fought at the Battles of Modder River on 28 November 1899 and Magersfontein on 11 December 1899, leading to the relief of Kimberley, and the battle of Paardeberg 18-27 February 1900 and the capture of Bloemfontein and advance towards Heilbron (South of Johannesburg), before heading to the Transvaal. He took part in the advance towards Balmoral (16-25 July 1900) and then to Nelspruit, arriving there on 4 September 1900. The Battalion was then sent west of Pretoria and for some months assisted in guarding Rustenburg, Oliphant, and Megato Neks, and escorted convoys from Commando Nek to Rustenburg. Private Gilmour died of enteric fever (typhoid) at Pretoria.

Private J. Hay was killed in action at the Battle of Modder River in Cape Colony during the advance of a British column under Lord Methuen that was attempting to relieve the besieged town of Kimberley. This action forced the Boers under General Piet Cronjé to retreat to Magersfontein.

The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the "Orcana" about 27 October 1899, and arrived at the Cape about 18 November 1899. Along with the 2nd Black Watch, 1st Highland Light Infantry, and 2nd Seaforths, they formed the 3rd or Highland Brigade under Major General Wauchope. On arrival they joined the Kimberley Relief Force under Major General Lord Methuen. They fought at the battles of Modder River on 28 November 1899 and Magersfontein on 11 December 1899, leading to the relief of Kimberley, and the battle of Paardeberg 18-27 February 1900. Private Howden was killed in action at Paardeberg on the first day of the battle.

Private J. Henderson was accidentally killed on 10 December 1901 at Elands River Station.
He was the brother of William, James, Alexander, Mary, Agnes, Hugh, Robert, and George Henderson (Record of deceased soldiers effects).
Elands River Station on the Delagoa Bay railway line in the South African Republic, Gauteng, 18 km east of Bronkhorstpruit. After the Battle of Diamond Hill (Donkerhoek), Lt.-Gen. I. S. M. Hamilton's Mounted Infantry Division bivouacked at the station for the night of 03 June 1900 in his pursuit of the retreating Boer forces. It was the location of a black concentration refugee camp.

Corporal T. Kidney was enlisted into the Army in 1885. He was 35 years old when he died of dysentery in No. 6 General Hospital, Naauwpoort (Noupoort), Colesberg District, Cape Province.
