In proud and loving memory of
Arthur Richard Fitz Herbert,
third son of the late Lt. Col. Fitz Herbert of Somersal Herbert,
enlisting as a trooper in the Wellington Mounted Rifles in 1915.
He served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Palestine
against the Turks.
He was wounded at the first Battle of Gaza
on 26 March 1917 and died of his wounds the next day, aged 63.
He was buried at Deir-el-Belah.

Arthur Richard Fitz Herbert was baptised in Tissington, Derbyshire, England on 22 February 1854. His parents were Richard Henry and Susan Fitz Herbert, nee Castle. The family resided at Nettleworth Hall, Warsop in Nottinghamshire at that time. He was married to Mary Lucy Marshall in New Zealand in 1881. Following children of the couple are known: Arthur Geoffrey Marshall Fitz Herbert (1882-1974), Beresford Close Fitz Herbert (1884-1969), Hugo Blois Fitz Herbert (1885-1969), and Mildred Mary Fitz Herbert (1891-1984).
