Sacred to the memory of Admiral Sir Arthur William Acland Hood Baron Hood of Avalon G. C. B. Third son of Sir Alexander Hood of Wootton House in this parish. Baronet by Amelia Anne, his wife, daughter of Sir Hugh Bateman of Hartington Hall, Co. Derby, Baronet. He served in Syria, the Crimea and China and was sometime A. D. C. to H. M. Queen Victoria, Director of Naval Ordnance, Commander of the Channel Squadron and a Lord Commissioner of the Admirality. ♦ He based and commanded the Glastonbury Volunteers in 1850. Born at Bath July 11th 1824 ♦ Died at Wooton House Nov 16th 1901.

In memory of Alexander Hood Esqr, Captain Royal Navy who (whilst commanding H. M. S. Mars of 74 guns on the night of the 21st April 1798) lashing his ship to the enemy fought and conquered, after a desperate action, the french ship L'Hercule of equal force and in the moment of victory fell gloriously. |

Beneath this tomb are deposited the remains of Sir Alexander Hood, Bart. of Wootton House in this parish Member of Parliament for the western division of the country. He was zealous and conscientious, a warm and faithful friend who fully embraced his responsibilities as a man and a Christian. Steadfastness and resilience on the merits of his saviour, helped him to follow God's will with steadfastness and perseverance He died on the 7th day of 1851.

Captain Alexander Hood was born in Mosterton, Dorset, England on 23 April 1758. His parents were Samuel and Anne Hood, nee Bere. He was married to Elizabeth Periam Hook in Butleigh, Somerset, England on 11 July 1792. He died at sea off Point du Raz, France on 21 April 1798.
Sir Alexander Hood, Baronet Audries, was born in Butleigh, Somerset, England on 05 July 1793 and was baptised in Butleigh on 01 January 1794. His parents were Captain Alexander Hood (1758-1798) and Elizabeth Periam Hook (1770-1855), nee Wooton. He was married to Amelia Ann Bateman in Devon, England on 03 August 1815. He died on 07 March 1851 and was buried in Butleigh, Somerset, England on 19 March 1851. |
