War Memorial - Coundon and Leeholme
Co. Durham, England

1914 - 1918, 1939-1945  and further conflicts

War Memorial - Coundon, Co. Durham, England

The original Memorial Soldier was unveiled on 24th September 1921 but had to be removed in the 1960s because of decay and deterioration of the concrete structure. A dedicated group of local people formed the S. O. 5. (Save Our Soldier) Committee which, in partnership with Wear Valley District Council and Groundwork West Durham, actioned the communities' desire to create a new Memorial to respect the memory of all those who served and gave their lives for their country.
The new stone soldier was proudly dedicated on Remembrance Sunday 11th November 2007. Originally erected to commemorate the war dead from the Great War 1914-1919, the Memorial Soldier serves to remind us of the Second World War 1939-1945 and all other conflicts.
