In the early hours of the morning of the 1st November 1940, the Luftwaffe raided RAF Wattisham dropping butterfly bombs the length and breadth of the airfield.
11 Airmen of 110 Sqn RAF lost their lives that morning as they lay sleeping in their beds. A direct hit on their accommodation block resulted in a roof collapse. In a further twist of fate, 10 days later two other Airmen of the same Squadron were killed when an unexploded bomb detonated whilst they were clearing the site.
