Memorial 24 October 1963

10 ihrer Kameraden starben neben ihnen. Wir konnten Ihnen nicht mehr helfen.

Thick fog laid over the terrain on 24 October 1963 as against 8.00 p.m. sedimentation pond 12 broke through the bottom. Water and mud were flown into the mine Mathilde. All tunnels were flooded until the 60 m floor level. 29 miners lost their lives. In a superhuman effort and thanks to wonderful additions was it possible to save 11 miners out of a cavity in the fracture in 60 m depth via a rescue bore hole after 14 days. 10 of their comrades died beside them. We were not able to help them.
