A newspaper reported the death of George Blakeney.
THE KILLED AND WOUNDED.
Much regret will be felt in Hull at the news that Sergt. George Blakeney, the well-known Hull tenor singer, has been killed in action in France. Lieut. Ryder, of the K. O. Y. L. I., has written the parents that Sergt. Blakeney was killed on August 21 in action when leading his platoon.
Mr. Blakeney was frequently a singer at meetings of the Withernsea Musical Union, and at concerts in Hull and Holderness, and it will be recalled that about four years ago he won a £40 prize at the Palace in a singing competition. He was 32 years of age.

Royal Naval Reserve, H. M. Trawler "Ruby"
Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent, UK
Son of Carrie Jameson,
of "Detroite Villas", Withernsea, Hull,
husband of Annie N. Bainbridge, formerly Jameson, nee Bell,
of 53, Phoenix Street, Goole, Yorkshire.

October 1917:
The trawler "Ruby" was one of the local escort vessels of convoy OF8 out of Falmouth on the 13th October. After OF8 had been handed on, they took over as escorts to convoy HG20, which had left Gibraltar on 8th October 1917, bound for London.
On Wednesday morning, 17th of October, one of the convoy, the cargo ship "Polvena" was torpedoed by "U 53" (Hans Rose), off the island of Ushant. Three of "Polvena's" crew were killed, the rest were taken off. Two of the escorts, Admiralty trawlers "Ruby" and "Conway Castle" Admiralty No.1987 (SA 35, Swansea), were ordered to stand by the ship, which was still afloat, until a tug arrived. They patrolled around the vessel until 5.30pm when the "Ruby" was hit by a torpedo, she broke up and sank, with the loss of all eighteen hands. This second attack was made by "U 79" (Werner Löwe), who had missed his intended target "Polvena", and hit the "Ruby" instead. The approximate position is given as 48° 50'N, 5° 10'W.
